Artificial intelligence is rapidly changing higher education, research, and the workplace. During the coming year, UNCG faculty and staff will have the opportunity to explore ChatGPT Edu, OpenAI’s higher education platform designed specifically for colleges and universities.

Through an agreement between the UNC System and OpenAI, and with support from Information Technology Services, UNCG is launching a one-year ChatGPT Edu pilot. The pilot will help the university evaluate how AI can responsibly support teaching, learning, research, creativity, and university operations.

About the Pilot

The ChatGPT Edu pilot will help UNCG evaluate how the platform can:

  • Prepare AI-ready graduates
  • Support faculty research and scholarship
  • Improve operational effectiveness
  • Explore innovative teaching and learning practices
  • Evaluate the long-term role of AI at UNCG

Throughout the pilot, UNCG will gather feedback from participants to help determine whether ChatGPT Edu should become a long-term university service.

Why ChatGPT Edu?

Unlike consumer AI tools, ChatGPT Edu provides institutional security, administrative controls, and privacy protections designed specifically for higher education.

Key features include:

  • Advanced AI models for teaching, research, writing, coding, and analysis
  • Enterprise security and encryption
  • Data that is not used to train OpenAI’s public models
  • Institutional account management
  • Higher usage limits than free consumer accounts

As with any technology platform, users should continue to follow university policies regarding confidential, regulated, or protected information.

Before You Sign Up

Before requesting access, please review the “Should I Sign Up for the ChatGPT Edu Pilot?” guide.

If you currently have a personal ChatGPT account that uses your uncg.edu email address, there are considerations that may affect your existing account. Check the FAQ for more information.

Request Access

The pilot has a limited number of licenses. A portion will be reserved for special projects, and the remaining licenses are open to anyone who requests access — there are no other eligibility requirements. Spots will be filled on a first-come, first-served basis, in the order requests are received, until the available licenses are gone. Because provisioning access can take up to two weeks, please submit your request in July to have access in place by the start of classes in August.
