ChatGPT EDU FAQ

As part of a one-year pilot, UNCG is providing selected faculty and staff access to ChatGPT Edu, a version of ChatGPT designed for colleges and universities. This page answers common questions about the pilot, including who can participate, how data is handled, available training resources, and what to expect during the program.

ChatGPT Edu is OpenAI’s enterprise platform designed specifically for colleges and universities. It provides advanced AI capabilities along with institutional security, administrative controls, and higher usage limits.

The UNC System Faculty Assembly and other stakeholders identified unequal access to AI tools between campuses as an issue where the system could help. The System office engaged various AI vendors to negotiate contractual terms and low rates that provided all UNC System Institutions the opportunity to adopt AI tools. UNCG ITS generously agreed to fund a 1yr pilot of ChatGPT EDU using the contract and low rates negotiated by System Office. Additional AI providers and pilot opportunities are expected.

No. Data within ChatGPT Edu is not used to train OpenAI’s public models by default.

It depends upon the use case.

Faculty and staff should continue following all university policies regarding confidential, regulated, protected, or sensitive information. Consult with ITS before using Banner data, data classified level 3 or 4, and/or data covered by HIPPA or FERPA.

Generally, no.

This pilot is focused on faculty and staff. A limited number of approved pilot courses may include student licenses.

Should I sign up?

It depends.

If your personal ChatGPT account uses a personal email address, you should generally be able to continue using that account separately.

If your existing ChatGPT account uses your uncg.edu email address and you sign up for the pilot, which also requires your UNCG email address, you have the following options: 

  1. Delete your existing non-pilot account and all associated data to participate in the one-year pilot. Please note that after deleting an account, OpenAI requires a 30-day waiting period before the same email address can be used to create or join another account, including the pilot. Additionally, participation in the pilot is not guaranteed beyond the one-year pilot period. 
  2. Merge your existing non-pilot account into the ChatGPT EDU pilot, bringing your account data into the pilot environment. Be aware that any data moved into the pilot may be lost if the pilot ends after one year and continued access is not provided.

The pilot lasts one year, and UNCG has not yet made a decision regarding long-term licensing. Participants should not assume that work created during the pilot will remain available indefinitely.

The pilot includes a limited number of licenses. Our goal is to learn how ChatGPT Edu supports teaching, research, and university operations before making decisions about broader implementation.

  • OpenAI Academy resources (Available now)
  • UNCG workshops (Available this Fall)
  • Community discussions highlighting successful use cases
