Joining the ChatGPT Edu pilot is optional. The pilot is intended for faculty and staff who are interested in exploring how generative AI can support their work while helping UNCG evaluate future AI services.
This pilot may be a good fit if…
- You want to learn how AI can improve your work.
- You currently do not rely on a personal ChatGPT workspace.
- You are interested in experimenting with AI in teaching, research, or administration.
- You want to help shape UNCG’s future AI strategy.
You may want to wait if…
- Your existing ChatGPT account uses your uncg.edu email address.
- You have extensive projects, GPTs, or conversations stored in an existing ChatGPT account.
- Your primary goal is to use ChatGPT directly with students this year.
Important Considerations
The pilot lasts one year
UNCG will evaluate whether to continue offering ChatGPT Edu after the pilot concludes. While we hope the service will continue, long-term availability has not yet been determined. Participants should avoid assuming work created during the pilot will remain permanently available.
Existing ChatGPT accounts using UNCG email
If you currently use your UNCG email with a personal ChatGPT account, please read this carefully before enrolling.
If you already have a ChatGPT account using a UNCG email and you sign up for the pilot which also uses your UNCG email then you will face the following options: 1. Delete your non-pilot account and all of its data to participate in the 1yr pilot understanding that in a year that may not continue. 2. Merge your non-pilot account with the ChatGPT EDU pilot bringing all your data into the pilot understanding it may be lost if the pilot ends after one year.
This only applies in cases where you are using your UNCG email connected to an existing ChatGPT account. If you have a personal account attached to a non-UNCG email, then you will be able to switch between the UNCG pilot ChatGPT EDU and your personal ChatGPT accounts.

Student access
Because this pilot includes a limited number of licenses, it is primarily intended for faculty and staff. Only a small number of approved pilot courses will include student access. Faculty seeking AI tools that students can broadly use should continue using Microsoft Copilot during the pilot.
What happens after I apply?
- Submit the application form.
- Requests will be approved on a first come, first served basis, until the available licenses are used.
- Provisioning access can take up to two weeks.
- Approved participants will receive activation instructions via email.
- Participants will have access to optional training and support.
- Throughout the year we will invite participants to share feedback and examples of successful use.
